Senior Sustainability (ESG) Risk Advisor

In your role as Senior Sustainability (ESG) Risk Advisor you analyze the bank’s corporate clients on their sustainability performance and ambitions. You assess whether these are in line with the bank’s standards and advise the Client Acceptance and Credit Risk Committees on any required actions such as engagement and intensified monitoring. You are a liaison with the business line and other Sustainability teams within the bank, maintaining frequent dialogue and raising risks related to i.a. strategy and policy implementation
In your role as Senior Sustainability (ESG) Risk Advisor within Credit Risk, you are responsible for:
- Client assessments & advice: you investigate information from a wide range of sources (e.g. clients’ sustainability reports and NGO reports) to detect potential ESG and reputational risks. You assess clients’ ESG performance and ambitions against the bank’s Sustainability Risk Appetite, Policies and Standards. You advise the Client Acceptance and Credit Risk Committees
- Effective implementation of ABN AMRO’s Sustainability strategy: you assess the need and the potential to actively support / challenge our clients’ sustainability shift. You challenge the 1st line and you advise the Client Acceptance and Credit Risk Committees.
- Sustainable Finance Regulations and AAB Sustainability Policy Framework: you stay up to date with developments regarding laws and regulations including the ECB Guide on Climate and Environmental Risks, the EU Taxonomy and the EU Directive on Corporate Social Due Diligence.
- Thought leadership and training: spread knowledge and awareness of sustainability among Credit Risk Decisioning.
- ESG Risk Policies and Standards: you stay up to date with developments such as laws and regulations and societal expectations. You contribute to (the periodic reviews of) the bank’s Sustainability Risk Appetite and Policies.
You will become part of a team of highly driven ESG experts within Credit Risk Sustainability. You perform a 2nd Line of Defense role in detecting ESG risks and independently advising the Client Acceptance and Credit Risk Committees on the acceptability of both lending and non-lending clients.
You will connect and communicate with a broad range of stakeholders, both inside and outside the bank. You challenge and support them and you actively integrate ESG risks within the bank’s Risk Management processes.
You are a Sustainability Risk professional, ideally with a background in ESG Risk and Sustainable Finance. You are a team player and communicative. You like to take different perspectives into account and you are able to integrate these in concise analyses and advices. You are not afraid to challenge the status quo and you are able to work on multiple cases and projects while meeting deadlines.
Skills and Experience:
- Masters degree in a relevant discipline
- 7+ years of experience in sustainability / ESG, preferably at a financial institution or consultancy.
- Experience in (ESG) Risk Management analysis and decisioning, Compliance or Corporate Governance is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of international ESG frameworks such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Equator Principles, Net Zero Banking Alliance, EU and ECB Sustainable Finance Regulations.
- Knowledge of credit risk or KYC processes is a plus.
- Must have requirement: Fluent in English and Dutch, good English and Dutch writing skills.
