Working at Data Engineering

With a combination of software & tools straight from the market leaders (such Microsoft), and self-build top-of-the-line tooling, Data Engineering is the heart of our Data IT Development within ABN AMRO. With help of all kinds of tools and technologies, we safeguard, maintain, distribute and analyse the data for the entire bank, and provide solutions to all business lines. The possibilities are vast.

Building software is great, but creating value out of 7 petabytes of data is better! While this means we value our top notch quality standard, you’ll be surprised by the informal atmosphere in which we do this.

Your job

To speed up, transform and strengthen the implementation of our IT and Data strategy we are searching for a leader with a proven track record in DevOps, IT modernization and IT transformation. You will be driving the further development of our Customer Data Administration technology landscape. The majority of this IT Landscape is residing on the Mainframe. Boring, old? Not at all…! This landscape is the beating heart of our Dutch customer administration and requires to function 24/7 to ensure we maximize our service to our customers. Your job will to make it better and prepare it for the future!

While performing this role, your responsibility will be to build up a strong department with a solid Engineering culture, set a future state direction for the technology landscape and head the transformation to get there yourself. This means you understand the value the Public Cloud (Azure) as well as the value of the Mainframe. You understand that Legacy is something to be proud of. You seek any opportunity in new technology to make the whole more efficient, smarter and more innovative. As IT Lead you will need to interact with a wide variety of stakeholders within the whole organization making your day interesting to say the least!

The working environment

You will be responsible for several agile teams (called Blocks within ABN AMRO) with a DevOps culture in development. Here, you will set the standards for the DevOps culture and further develop it, support DevOps (Run, Change and Security) for the Customer Administration related value streams, and become responsible for all IT Engineers collaborating in this unit. The teams are continuously collaborating with technology architects, business architects, enterprise data advisors, business lines, international branches and subsidiaries of the bank. We all work together at the frontier of a major digital data revolution and with the core value-assets of the organization.

From a technology perspective, you will deal with a combination of proven technology, such as Java, Mainframe and on-premise Cloud Infrastructure, and software & tools straight from the market leaders such as Microsoft Azure and Public Cloud applications. All in a diverse, dynamic and complex environment.

Your profile

Leading teams comes natural to you, and in doing so you keep an eye out for things to improve and make better. You are able to create an atmosphere of trust, delegated responsibility and a high degree of safety and you feel at your best when your teams excel and take the stage. While engaging with various different stakeholders, and mobilizing them through difficult transitions, you are able to keep a holistic view on things, allowing you to easily translate what you see into concrete actions. You know how to handle conversations on various management levels, and know which information you should present and in what format depending on the stakeholder groups you are dealing with.

This is on your resumé:

• Strong in IT Leadership and notable experience leading teams and/or departments
• Leadership experience in Agile and/or DevOps environments
• Developed an IT Strategy and translated it to reality
• Experience with a transformation, preferably towards Microsoft Azure
• Affinity with data (bonus)
• Fluent in English (Dutch is a bonus)
