TEAM LEAD LEGAL WB/SECTORS&LENDING

About ING Legal Wholesale Banking Legal WB (LWB) steers on pro-active and sustainable legal advice in order to mitigating future risks and to contribute to a safe and secure bank. LWB supports the Amsterdam and international business units of ING in providing banking products to corporates and other bigger sized companies. LWB provides transaction support and is involved in (product) innovation, implementation of legislation and regulations, international cooperation and harmonization of processes and products.

The opportunity:

LWB is embarking a transformation journey with the implementation of a new Legal WB organization per 1 September. As part of the reorganization we merge two Legal Lending & Transaction teams into a one team. For this team we search an inspirational team lead with strong leadership skills who takes the challenge to lead the team during the transition, build an effective, sustainable, integrated team.

LWB consists of five teams, including the Sectors & Lending team.

About LWB/S&L

The Sectors & Lending (S&L) team of LWB consists of approx. 18 lawyers, supporting a wide range of traditional and innovative banking products such as:

• Structured Finance
• Cash management

Offered by internal clients active in sectors such as Energy and Food & Agri.

The team is involved in transaction support, product development and incidents. The team is responsible for timely implementing new laws and regulations. The team works closely together with the business. We share knowledge and experience within legal via practice groups, quarterly updates, one-on-one discussions, lunch & learn sessions. To ensure an efficient transaction process we develop and maintain policies, check lists, guidelines and best practices. We provide the business with various training sessions to ensure that they are well aware of the legal ins and outs of the products they work with.

S&L works closely together with ING lawyers around the globe and with (international) law firms. The team sets the material terms for external counsel representing ING in dealings with (prospect) business clients

Purpose of the role

• Be the horizon scanner for S&L that contributes to the strategy and long-term success of ING WB
• Steer the S&L team on delivering pro-active and sustainable legal advice and effective solutions tailored to future uncertainties to ensure a safe and secure WB business.
• Ensure that the team operates as a high performing team and act as one center of excellence for S&L legal matters and maintain quality and continuity of legal staff in the S&L team

• Ensure maximum standardization and optimization of the legal support, including avoidance of overlap on a global scale, seeking efficiencies e.g. by way of automation and sourcing and further implementation of risk based support models.
• Inform the Global Head LWB promptly and adequately about material incidents and relevant developments.

Role Complexity

• Highly complex global business environment in a matrix model, with a mix of hierarchical steering, functional steering and a broad variation of products and customers each having local legal and regulatory landscapes and practices
• Dealing with departments responsible for ING's problem loans , for litigation claims in/out, funding and group treasury.
• Management responsibility: for approx. 18 direct reports.
• Internal stakeholders: Heads of the various S&L desks, senior management of the business lines, Legal heads in WB locations and local business management, internal bodies.
• External contacts: panel firms and various industry bodies
• The role reports to Global Head LWB .

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced, people-oriented legal professional who can lead the newly created S&L team. The candidate has a strong legal understanding of traditional and innovative banking products and current developments in the international financial field that ING operates in.

The ideal candidate is a reliable, culturally sensitive and open-minded person. She/he is an engaging and emphatic personality with a sense of humor and perspective, who will lead the S&L team in a professional and inclusive manner.

Candidate profile

Key requirements

• At least 10 years of relevant experience in the financial industry or a top tier law firm
• Extensive experience and strong track record in a managerial role
• Experienced with continuous improvement and optimization of an organization structure, products and processes
• Excellent communication skills and fluent in English
• A university degree in law
