The opportunity

To enable execution of the Making the Difference strategy, ING has setup an Operational Design, Control and Resilience department which is a team that works closely with CEO/COO and ING Board, as well as representatives from all business units and functions under the COO, and stakeholders across the Bank.

Within ODCR, the new department 1LoD Methodology, reporting & gatekeeper will focus on ensuring bank wide, overall reporting for control & resilience, the design of 1LoD methodology, and the planning and prioritization of bank wide 1LoD activities in close alignment with 2LoD. Furthermore, the 1LoD gatekeeper for control standards and frameworks role is included in this


Role and responsibilities

You hierarchically lead a team of 9 specialists in 1LoD Methodology, reporting & gatekeeper, report to the Head of Operational Design, Control & Resilience and together with your team,

you will be responsible for:

  • Creating a vision to optimise the organisation and way of working for control & resilience across 1LoD in ING. Items to take in are: role clarity for risk owners in the domain, efficiency in the way we monitor controls, gather reporting data, build communities, communicate to business leaders, etc.;
  • Ensure together with the 2LoD the optimal planning for improvement projects in the field of organisation/way of working/ processes/ tooling/ etc. for control & resilience in ING;
  • Ensure the shared creation and implementation of Resilience & Control methodology and tooling (where relevant) and continuous improvement of methodology and materials, with the aim to increase resilience, stability, agility, efficiency and effectiveness in the risk & control management of INGs processes;
  • Overall bank-wide reporting for control and resilience, ensuring that the reporting used in all locations and business lines to reflect the status of control and resilience is standardized fostering relevant discussion and data-driven decision making;
  • Primary contact for business leaders in ING covering a specific area of the bank such as WB, ML, Retail, COO, EMEA, Asia, etc. to explain control and resilience status for respective scope, based on the overall bank-wide reporting for that specific scope;
  • Ensure effective and engaged collaboration between the Process Control & resilience community members across countries. Play a community lead role where relevant and ensure this community is thriving: best practices are shared and taken, international collaboration is visibly delivering results, either in efficiency, standardisation across countries, and/or increased effectiveness of control(s);
  • 1LoD contact for the NFR Framework and policy champion for the PARP (also Control Standard owner) and Change Initiative policies;
  • 1LoD gatekeeper for control standards and frameworks.

Proven track record and skills:

  • Masters degree
  • Relevant courses on people management, leadership and particular risk areas (e.g. data, KYC, conduct, IT, …)
  • 15+ years professional experience in banking/ business consultancy/ risk & control
  • Demonstrated track record of building and maintaining highly collaborative, flexible, and productive teams
  • Demonstrated track record of creating and driving a vision for the area/ business line/ department/ process/ etc.
  • A good understanding of the organisation, strategy and our way of working
  • Track record in inspiring others to achieve their goals
  • Track record in the implementation of large/complex change
  • Experience in working in a global organization with different cultures and maturity levels
  • Experience in the field of risk management is preferred
  • International experience in Retail, Wholesale Banking and/or support functions experience is preferred
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills (senior management level)
  • Outstanding oral and written communication, as well as negotiation and change management skills
  • Ability to take responsibility, steer strategy and realisations based on facts and data
  • Managerial courage to question and make decisions
  • Ability to empower teams to act autonomously, think out of the box and hold them accountable
  • Ability to simplify complexity and drive operational excellence
  • Ability to support yourself and other team members in their development
  • Ability to have impact through inspiring and energetic leadership that leads teams through change
