The Opportunity

Financial Markets (FM) is the Bank’s gateway to the professional markets around the world. Our primary function is to service the needs of ING’s clients with products, services and guidance. FM aims to be a significant player in our market leader and challenger markets, with an additionalpresence in all the major international markets and specialist expertise in selected emerging markets and products.

ING Financial Markets is looking for a Head of Equity Markets to lead the global FM Equity Markets Franchise (Research/analysts, Sales & Sales-Trading).

Role and Responsibilities

The Head of Equity Markets is responsible for the FM teams that play a key role in the primary and secondary distribution of cash equities to the ING investor clients base, in line with the commercial strategy of WB & FM and within the NFR and KYC guidelines.

Next to being accountable for the delivery and reporting of the FM cash equity product revenue budget, he/she is responsible for the day to day operations and internal alignment of the team of approx. 20 FTE.

This person has a deep understanding of how the equity value chain works and how this product fits within the overall wholesale banking and ING clients strategy and value proposition.

He/she works very closely together with the other parts of the equity value chain (Sector Coverage and Equity Capital Markets) and local and functional FM management so as to actively grow the ING footprint through intense collaboration with other FM and wholesale banking teams.

Develops and executes a pragmatic strategic vision and ensures compliant sales activities as well as full client coverage alignment through close collaboration with Institutional sales - in order to maximise cross sell and overall share of wallet of investors.

Located in one of the current EMEA cash equity hubs (Amsterdam or Brussels), the head of Equities reports to the Global Head of institutional sales & distribution.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the delivery and correct reporting of the FM equity product revenue budget

  • You meet frequently with key clients to build Trust, brand awareness, discuss the firm’s strengths and overall capabilities, drive incremental business, and deepen relationships

  • Ensure the team is adequately staffed in terms of both quality and quantity – build future proof performing, diverse and inclusive teams

  • Lead by example and install a culture of performance, transparency and trust – enabling team members, internal and external stakeholders to be successful

  • Build bridges to further increase the integration of the equity team in FM through structural interaction. You actively seek to understand and explain the FM strategy, drivers and mechanics of the FM organization and ensure concrete deliveries (reporting etc) are done as required

  • Responsible for evaluation and professional growth of team members

  • Actively align equity stakeholders such that the team and wider value chain are equipped to clearly position ING‘s product capabilities towards clients. Building strong rapport and a strong relationship with ECM is crucial in this respect.

  • Establish ING as recognized and credible equity house within the Investor community (measured by a.o. II (old Extel) ranking) and client broker votes

  • Engage with senior external stakeholders, clients and peers, building and maintaining an (international) professional network

  • Formulate, allocate and monitor commercial objectives and cost budgets

  • Ensure all activities of the team are conducted within relevant regulations, ING risk policies and guidelines

  • University education (Master's degree) preferably in Economics or other Master’s degree supplemented with Business degree, Accounting or Finance

  • Excellent level English both written and verbal


  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in the equity product – previous managerial and international experience is a plus

  • Proven affinity and connection with the Financial Markets environment – you always keep an eye for the bigger picture.

  • Experience with setting and executing strategy, drafting budgets and commercial goals

  • Track record of leading by example, forging team spirit through a culture of transparency and trust (both within the team and with stakeholders)

  • Capable of steering senior professionals, building and developing high-performance teams that excel in collaboration and client coverage of internal and external clients

  • Extensive professional network (internally and externally)

  • Experience with KYC and compliance processes


  • You have strong organizational sensitivity skills, you understand and take into account the underlying issues, opportunities and dynamics of a global organization with multiple functional and hierarchical lines and have proven you are able to deal with multiple (sometimes conflicting) interests

  • You lead by example, have demonstrated you are a genuine team player and can build and empower senior teams in a global context, entrusting them to act autonomously while holding them accountable for delivering results on our common purpose
