The opportunity
Ongoing developments and intensifications in internal and external (legal and regulatory) requirements require Legal Department Bank to step-up its global potential in business support provided by Legal. To ensure that the Legal department fully optimizes its expertise and global potential, it is embarking on a transformation journey.
The ambition of the Legal Department Bank is to contribute to the long term success of the ING business. To ensure a safe and secure bank, Legal steers on pro-active and sustainable legal advice, aiming at mitigating future risks. The Legal function needs strong business alignment and efficient reporting lines to be promptly and adequately informed about issues, such as material incidents and relevant developments and thus able to think and act ahead.
To support these goals, Legal Department Bank has decided to further strengthen the functional steering and organise the Legal function in a different way.
Therefore we created two new expert supporting roles; Legal Expert Functional steering and Global Projects , one for Legal WB and one for Legal Retail . For Legal Retail the Expert will be the wing(wo)man for the new Global Legal Head Retail, in which (s)he:
- Supports the restructured functional steering via business lines with combined product and functional steering;
- Promotes cross-team optimisation and collaboration (incl. addressing common pain points and sharing best practises and improvements);
- Enables global scalability and idea implementation; and
- Assesses the realised impact thereof.
Roles and responsibilities
The Legal Expert Functional Steering and Global Projects:
- Facilitates and coordinates functional steering, in close consultation with the Global Head Retail Legal;
- Steers and/or monitors Retail Legal related initiatives:
- Functional steering and monitoring of the Legal functions in the Retail-only countries
- Legal product support and legal policy steering for Retail in other locations
- Supports standardisation and optimisation of functional steering;
- Assess and classify risks and development based on legal expertise;
- Ensures adequate (incident) reporting;
- Drives, supports and/or monitors (global) legal initiatives and projects strengthening the Legal operational effectiveness, including Legal Tech, legal product and process development and implementation;
- Ensures adequate and timely reporting to the Global Head on the progress of these initiatives;
- Reports Management Information, such as FTEs and budget.
Resulting in:
- the Global Head Retail Legal and legal department being enabled to pro-actively advise the business and mitigate legal risks.
Role complexity:
(S)he operates in the Legal Retail community, supporting the functional steering with a broad variation of products, each having local Legal and regulatory landscape and practices.
Skills and experience needed for the role
- Law degree with post graduate specialization in law required
- Expert with demonstrable legal knowledge of and experience in legal support of Retail business and with Retail products
- Sophisticated and mature relationship style and able to 'connect the dots' and challenge on a senior level
- Organisational sensitivity and able to empathise with local circumstances
- Resilient
- Sound judgment
- Pro-active, convincing, firm character who can challenge peers and (senior) management
- Tactical thinker with a risk-based mindset
- An analytic self-starter with a strong execution drive, stress-resistant and flexible
- Excellent organisation (e.g. planning, reporting, quality checks, events) and project/consultancy skills and experienced with MS applications.
- Fluent in English
