Model Validation is looking for an enthusiastic Chapter Lead

ING’s Model Validation Banking Book Risks tribe (MV BBR) is an energetic, collaborative & innovative international team of about 40 highly qualified professionals of various quantitative backgrounds, located in Amsterdam & Warsaw.

We are responsible for validating ING’s Banking Book Risk models worldwide (in more than 40 countries, with a ~EUR 900 bln balance sheet), consisting of mainly Interest Rate Risk & Credit Spread Risk in the Banking Book (IRRBB & CSRBB), Asset & Liability Management (ALM), Liquidity Risk, Operational Risk & Business Risk models.

Our aim is to independently assess whether a certain model is fit for the purpose it was designed for, based on the intended business use, financial & econometric theories, empirical evidence & regulations. We play an important role in safeguarding the quality of ING’s models, which are considered strategic assets.

Our team has considerably grown in size in the last few years, following ING’s Think Forward Strategy & the global Model Risk Management (r)evolution. It currently consists of 3 chapters, 2 in A’dam & 1 in Warsaw, with Chapter Lead, Product Owner, Validation Lead & Validator roles. This vacancy concerns a Chapter Lead role for a 3rd chapter in Amsterdam, primarily focussing on IRRBB, CSRBB & ALM models.

Responsibilities of a Chapter Lead

As a Chapter Lead, you drive the people agenda and spend about 40% of your time on people management & development, while 60% on content related tasks. You will:

  • manage a chapter of about 7 to 10 model validators (including recruitment & onboarding of new talents), and perform HR activities in the WorkDay system;
  • perform the annual Step Up Performance Management HR cycle with your chapter members (i.e. target setting, mid-year review, year-end appraisals);
  • have weekly meetings with your team members to coach & motivate them to further improve & grow (incl. further career development);
  • ensure continuous improvements, promote a feedback culture within the team & drive team happiness;
  • as a senior validation expert, be responsible for the high-quality validation work & reports performed by your chapter, in cooperation with the senior Validation Lead (who is also a content expert);
  • together with the Product Owner, ensure that the work is effectively allocated to your chapter members & consultants;
  • ensure a balance between team deliverables versus people development;
  • contribute to the (cross-)chapter’s backlog, with the aim of achieving our tribe goals together;
  • quality assure/review, present & defend validation reports at the model approval committees, during ECB onsite inspections & audits;
  • act as a trusted advisor & sparring partner for the tribe lead & other senior management;
  • set standards for safeguarding, developing & innovating craftsmanship/knowledge in the chapter’s fields of expertise, as well as contribute to further validation policy development.

You will be part of MV BBR’s leadership team, reporting directly to the Tribe Lead. Together with the other Chapter Leads, Product Owners & Validation Leads, you contribute to the further design of the tribe’s vision & strategy and drive its execution.

To effectively coach your chapter members on the content and be able to take end-responsibility on the quality of validations, you bring in senior level modelling/validation expertise. You have:

  • an academic degree (MSc or PhD) in a quantitative field such as Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics or Quantitative Economics;
  • at least 8 to 10 years of work experience in modelling and/or validation in the applicable risk areas, including extensive knowledge of these & the associated regulations;
  • ample, proven experience in leading/coaching others in an hierarchical or project role, both from a people management & content perspective. Teaching experience is a pré;
  • experience with the agile way of working;
  • ample experience with effective stakeholder management, as well as auditors, regulators and onsite inspections;
  • experience in being a pro-active sparring partner/advisor to senior management, in which your presentations are well structured, easy to follow & can be both high level and detailed (on e.g. the contents);
  • high-quality standards, you are organised & persuasive, you like to interact & build relationships, and are a role model in these aspects;
  • fluent communication skills in English, both verbally & in writing;

You are prepared to travel occasionally. Your main base is Amsterdam.

Your work environment

  • MV BBR is part of ING’s global Model Risk Management domain, consisting of 4 tribes: MV BBR, MV Trading Book Risks, MV Credit Risk and Model Risk Oversight.
  • Our main stakeholders are within ING’s head office & local risk departments worldwide, senior management (including the CRO’s management team, Executive Board & local CROs), internal & external auditors, ECB & other regulators. To ensure our independence and effective challenge, Model Risk Management reports directly to the CRO;
