Who are we looking for?

'Environment, Society & Governance is at the heart of everything we do'.

We are looking for a mature risk manager who will build the new Environment, Society & Governance (ESG) Risk team that heavily contributes to ING’s sustainability strategy.

The Head of Risk for Environment, Society & Governance (ESG) is responsible for the overarching second line role of risks related to environment, society, and governance. The activities and responsibilities from the head of Risk ESG are centering around the ESG framework, the risk appetite statement and risk reporting of ESG risks.

The Head of Risk ESG will lead a team of experts, who work on central coordination around ESR Risk. Alignment takes place under supervision of the Head of Risk ESG with ESG teams in the risk and business functions and/or countries and in other areas of the bank. The Head of Risk ESG ensures a holistic approach on ESG risks supporting ING to deliver clear and tangible outcomes and to develop sustainable ESG capabilities.

The ESG team is part of Integrated Risk which aims to create clear and holistic oversight across the different risks and business lines and needs to allow for integrated monitoring, reporting and management of risks.

Main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of the ESG risk framework, including risk appetite setting and scenario analysis.
  • Responsible for overall climate risk coordination within Risk;
  • Responsible for mapping, assessing, and implementing regulation around environment, society, and governance (ESG) in a timely and correct manner in our risk management frameworks, to ensure that ING meets the requirements and expectations of the regulator and society on ESG activities and develops ongoing maturity of ING’s ESG risk management capabilities.
  • Building an engaged ESG Risk team

Reporting lines

  • Reports directly into the Head of Integrated Risk;
  • Member of the Climate Risk Steering Group;

Education requirements

Academic level

Work experience and required skills

  • Strong 2nd Line of Defense experience in different (risk) areas (financial & non-financial);
  • ESG knowledge and experience;
  • Strong understanding of sustainability and climate change;
  • Mature experience as a people manager capable to build high performing teams;
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory environment in banking;
  • Excellent command of English, being able to demonstrate negotiation, presentation and writing skills;
  • Able to deal with cultural differences, conflicting interests, complex and unforeseen challenges, as well as to constructively cooperate with your peers in building a sustainable, effective and efficient working environment;

  • Able to see the bigger ESG picture, setting collaborations between departments and looking for synergies across the CRO domain;
