ING Environmental & Social Risk is looking for a Senior ESR Advisor!

The ESR Team is looking for a Senior ESR Officer. This team is part of the Wholesale Banking Credit Risk Management department. The WB CRM department is globally responsible for the transaction approval process and portfolio risk management of Wholesale bank portfolio’s and is based in Amsterdam. The department covers all Wholesale Banking sectors and comprises approximately 55 people of which 12 are in ESR. In your role as ESR Advisor in the ESR team you will report to the Head of the ESR Team.

The ESR Team supports ING’s strategy with the development and application of Environmental and Social Risk (ESR) Policies. These policies cover environmental, social, biodiversity, health and safety and human rights standards which we apply to ING’s engagements in areas such as energy, mining and metals, agri-commodities, manufacturing and defence among others. By applying these policies we promote positive change and support our clients in achieving an improved sustainability performance. This also translates into an improved risk profile of our client portfolio and therefore a more robust balance sheet for ING. It is a challenging and wide-ranging role that provides an excellent opportunity to learn about all aspects of environmental and social risk management.

Responsibilities and environment

Wholesale Banking Credit Risk Environmental and Social Risk Management is globally responsible for the assessment and advise on all WB transactions carrying high risk as well as the ownership and implementation of the ESR Policy. The department consists of 10 persons in Amsterdam, one in Geneva and one in New York. Working from home and being part of virtual teams is part of the day to day working environment. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing the potential environmental, social, biodiversity, human rights and health & safety risks in transactions, and helping to determine mitigation plans to address these risks;
  • Assessing the environmental and social risk profile and performance of clients to determine if they are within the Banks’ risk appetite;
  • Support the Front Office in providing mentorship to potential clients on the environmental and social risks review process which benchmarks the client's approach with industry standards and take into consideration international ESR/ESG standards.
  • Liaise with clients and external consultants and communicate our ESR due diligence requirements, including analyzing reports, joining client calls and conducting site visits when necessary.
  • Track and monitor WB client portfolio on conditions set in previous ESR advices;
  • Assess and provide relevant input to ING’s Annual Reports and other ESR reporting and public disclosures (e.g. ING’s Human Rights report, Climate Risk report etc).
  • Promotion and refinement of ING’s ESR Policy Framework. This includes providing feedback, to the review policy cycle and technical supporting teams as well as training to the Front Office, KYC teams and Risk colleagues as needed.
  • Performing research on a range of environmental and social issues and thematic topics such as deforestation, human rights, biodiversity, supply chain risk etc.
  • Update the ESR Team on ESR market development and trends that need to be considered for the development and update of the ESR Policy Framework.
  • Represent ING in different ESR initiatives and working groups such as Equator Principles, Thun Group, the Dutch Banking Association (NVB) and other industry associations relevant to ING.

Ideally you have experience in wholesale banking or risk management but must have an enquiring mind and be willing to ask questions to clearly understand the credit risk of transactions and portfolios.We look for a pro-active, dedicated and independent thinker. You must be able to display decision-maker potential with an ability to work in a demanding environment, and have:

  • A university degree in Finance, Economics, Biology, Social/Environment Sciences or related field;
  • Profound interest in Environment Social Risk and ESG topics, sustainability, international governmental frameworks, and global macro-economic trends;
  • 4+ years of experience in wholesale banking with transaction involvement e.g. through Credit Risk Management or Front Office;
  • 4+ years of experience in Environmental & Social risk, assessing transactions and clients, and having proficiency in the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards, IFC and World Bank Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines, Equator Principles and development of Action Plans;
  • Skills to act as sparring partner to Front Office, with an eye for strategy and organizational sensitivity;
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills in both English and preferably a second language. Ability to write clear and concise memos quickly;
  • Strong work ethic, with the ability to multi-task and work in a high-performance professional environment;
  • Willingness to travel.
