Who we are

We’re always looking for new ways to do things faster, better, cheaper. To move out of our comfort zone, even beyond banking, so that we can better serve the needs of customers with solutions that address their challenges.

Empowering people to stay a step ahead in life and business is ING’s purpose and the main driver for ING Labs. We focus on increasing the pace of innovation to serve changing customer needs. The Labs focus on thinking beyond traditional banking to develop new services to take to market.

We will support you in building your initiative by pitching for funding to ING’s Innovation Fund. We tackle the complex and messy process of building solutions by breaking them down into different phases with key validation points. For this we use ING’s innovation methodology, PACE , which builds on Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and Agile. Progress is assessed by the Innovation Fund and you pitch for your proposed next steps to be funded.

You will be working in the ING Labs Amsterdam office and/ or remotely in a very international and dynamic environment.

What you will be working on

Loan Optics is a project within ING’s innovation department, Neo. Loan Optics is creating an industry platform that will digitalize the corporate lending process (create ‘digitally native loans’), providing a single source of truth of data (’enter once, use frequently’) for syndicated and bilateral loans.

The platform is being built in 3 modules (Origination, In Life/Agency and Loan Book Management). The initial objective is to build the Origination module as this is where the loan data is created and negotiated. This module enables any bank to build a loan and capture the data, digitally.

To build an industry acceptable platform and to create a sales funnel for initial traction, Loan Optics has built a European Working Group (WG) which has been operating for 18 months. The Group comprises of 9 banks and 4 lending law firms.

After two successful simulation pilots in early 2022 with the WG members, we are now moving ahead and are planning the next steps. This means we intend to do more pilots and will now also focus on bilateral lending transactions in addition to syndicated loans. Specifically, we intend to execute a number of bilateral lending transactions through simulated and production pilots. These transactions will be between ING and selected borrowers (ING clients).

How we work:

  • We have a virtual team with professionals in UK, Netherlands and the Philippines
  • We collaborate closely to understand industry problems and ways of working so as to come up with new solutions
  • We interact frequently with our Working Group members to understand requirements, validate solutions and user test new features
  • Should Covid restrictions be removed (and stay removed) then we will be travelling to existing Working group member banks to run workshops and pitching to acquire new members
