Principal Data Scientist Global Risk and Pricing Team

Global Analytics Unit

You will be part of the Global Analytics Unit. T is a new unit responsible for realizing this vision for ING and differentiating ING as a leader in data-driven organizations within the banking sector and beyond. The team consists of a number of Global Analytics Centers of Excellences around the bank’s key capabilities (such as Pricing, Risk Management, FEC, Customer Intelligence) as well as strong coordination areas around data management, technology, customer journey and UX, as well as external partnerships.

Risk and Pricing Team

The Risk and Pricing Team is the global Centre of Excellence (CoE) of ING Group, providing our organization with Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence expertise as well as products at global level across all domains and businesses. Our team is based in Amsterdam and consists of 13 highly-skilled and talented data scientists from diverse backgrounds (physics, statistics, maths, computer science, econometrics, astrophysics). We work in a fun and creative environment and we are dedicated to bringing out the best in both each other and our projects through collaboration and knowledge-sharing.The portfolio of projects is broad and uses a wide range of algorithms and tools, but all relate to risk and pricing. The job

As a Principal Data Scientist you will be tasked with the coaching and personal development of a team of talented data scientists. You will be involved in all data science projects and be responsible for maintaining a very high quality standard. For 50% of your time you will have hands-on involvement in our most challenging data scientist projects. The job also offers the opportunity to travel to European cities such as Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Madrid, for about 20 to 30% of your time.

Furthermore, you will be responsible for promoting data science excellence within the organization. You will collaborate with engineers to bring advanced models to production, and you will work closely with international business units to identify opportunities for data science.

Candidate Profile

  • You are able to explain complicated subjects clearly.
  • You are friendly and approachable and are able to challenge data scientists
  • You are motivated to keep on top of the latest developments and to introduce them to the team and projects where applicable
  • You enjoy coaching and teaching others
  • You have experience with doing data science in large organizations
  • You have extensive knowledge of a wide range of machine learning algorithms, ranging from more classical econometric models to cutting-edge neural networks and are able to match them to business problems
  • You have strong programming skills in Python or R and know how to use tools like Spark, Hadoop, GIT, Bash and Docker. Additionally, you are familiar with talking to databases using SQL or Hive.

Required Skills

  • Deep theoretical knowledge of statistical modelling and machine learning to solve business questions and/or develop (innovative) data driven products
  • Knowledge of the latest developments in the analytics community (methods and tools) combined with the ability to decide which of these are most relevant to ING and translate them into opportunities
  • 4-6 years of (global) work experience in the data science field, preferably in risk and/or pricing domains
  • You have a strong background in mathematics and statistics (MSc or PhD)
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills at technical and business level
  • You can build and maintain social networks
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Although Dutch would be a plus, it is not necessary
  • Willingness to learn: open to feedback as well as to development on the technical and the interpersonal level
  • Willingness to travel
