The intern’s main job will be to make an overview of the most important/insightful studies that are available both publicly and in research portals on decision-making, especially financial decision-making. This overview should be useable by a diverse international network of people who are working on the Think Forward Initiative. This job is important because providing an overview of what is already available provides a good basis for harvesting existing ideas and for using insights for next steps – which could be developing new services for customers/consumers or doing further research. To be successful and happy in this role, the intern must be genuinely interested in the subject of (financial) decision-making.

The intern should be able to understand the content of research papers, to identify the key insights and to summarise and categorise them in an accessible way in language that is particularly useful for various people such as innovators, business people and other non-researchers, but also for researchers.


The job requires an inquisitive nature and stamina to get it done. The intern should also be comfortable to take the initiative and be resourceful to find and access different sources. Moreover, the candidate must be able to make qualitatively sound summaries. Fluency in written English is therefore a must.

Your work environment
As part of ING’s Global Research function, the Group Research team is a corporate-level support unit which provides economic and financial expertise to the Management Board Banking and ING’s business units; and also works together with several people/top experts and organisations outside of ING. The multitude of internal and external clients and stakeholders that Group Research works closely with include people from:
· Corporate departments such as the Chief Innovation Office and Corporate Strategy.
· ING departments across Europe.
· Universities, research institutes and consultancies.


It performs a broad array of thought leadership activities in the field of consumer research, sustainability and innovation. The Amsterdam-based part of the team currently consists of five employees. Decision-making, research about consumers, as well as business and innovation are themes that are of key strategic interest to the team and to ING. All members of the team work with colleagues from the London-based part of Group Research, especially with those from that work on international consumer economics. You will report to the Head of International Consumer Economics, Sustainability and Innovation at Group Research, Stefan van Woelderen. The Head of the team directly reports to ING’s Group Chief Economist, Mark Cliffe.


Key initiatives that Group Research is involved with or leads are
www.thinkforwardinitiative.com, the ING International Surveys, eZonomics.com and research activities around the digital economy. All of Group Research’ activities are inspired by the implications of changes in society on decision-making by people and businesses.


Who we are looking for?

  • An intern who is looking for a half-year assignment at a research department at ING.
  • A person with genuine interest in (financial) decision-making.
  • Last year bachelor or master in a subject that covers how people make decisions. For example: household finance, behavioural economics, microeconomics, psychology, sociology, anthropology.
  • A well-organised person who is able to identify key insights, summarise and categorise them in an overview an understandable way.
  • Ability to develop and maintain that overview so that it can be shared with a large network of people within and outside of ING.
  • Capacity to explain complex subjects in simple terms, especially in writing.
  • Native or near native language skills in English.
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual, data/statistical/quantitative and communication skills.
  • Initiative, a hands-on and entrepreneurial mentality, and stamina.
  • Ability to operate on a senior organisational level and to operate in an intellectually challenging internal and external environment.
  • Strong team spirit.
