This is a generic role description. Focus areas may differ per Squad and/or employee, depending on the specific activities performed within this role.
As part of a Squad, the Ops Engineer ensures the operational stability, integrity and availability of one or more in-house operated applications (incl. interfaces).
The Ops Engineer actively monitors, manages, tests, deploys and operates one or more applications (complying to the Statement of Service), noting the detailed technical behaviour and performance across all aspects of the application to proactively identify and prevent operational problems. He/she continuously improves the automation of deployment and operations tools and activities.
The Ops Engineer understands the complete stack from application to hardware. He/she understands the detailed workflow of the application, expected transactional volumes, the detailed technical behaviour of application servers and databases and the importance of maintaining a high security profile, safeguarding the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of ING data and information assets.


What will you do?
• You are going to operate a system on a daily basis
• Monitor the availability and performance of the services
• Configure and implement Monitoring Tooling to enable 24x7 monitoring of the entire technology stack using appropriate Event Alerts
• Monitor a system, including interfaces, databases, middleware, (virtual) operating system and hardware. This primarily applies to the Production environments but in a less formal way is relevant for the Acceptance environments as well
• Provide 2nd-line support, i.e. resolves incidents
• Escalate service related issues timely to the Service Manager when applicable
• Identify and resolve problems both as a result of incidents and pro-actively
• Specify, create, test and deploy runtime scripts (e.g. stop/start/purge/backup)
• Test and execute deployment and rollback scripts in the Acceptance and Production environment
• Deploy (new versions of) an application in the Acceptance and Production environments
• Take appropriate action after deployments if the application is not working in line with what was expected
• Determine impact of ING Infra changes and takes appropriate actions
• Specify acceptance criteria based on the application’s Statement of Service
• Perform acceptance, based on these acceptance criteria
• Perform Production Acceptance Tests
• Continuously improve the automation of testing, deployment and operations tools and
activities
• Ensure that the system capacity meets current and future business requirements in a costeffective
manner, proactively modelling trends and comparing with planned capacity
changes for the future
• Ensure that capacity changes are implemented, tested, and deployed prior to capacity
needs becoming an issue
• Ensure that all hardware and software within the system is suitably up-to-date, patched,
supportable, secure and current
• Monitor that system security complies to ING standards and policies
• Collect and register auditable evidence material that complies to Key Controls as defined in
ING IT Minimum Standards in appropriate tools (currently OCD) and ensures that it remains
up-to-date
• Take appropriate action if vulnerability scanning or patch testing gives rise for such
• Pro-actively monitor supplier’s release plans and initiate appropriate lifecycle management
stories when relevant
• Determine impact of new/changed ING standards and policies
• Ensure that the necessary risk related activities are timely performed
• Apply version control where applicable
• Conduct accurate maintenance of application components in the Configuration
Management Database (CMDB)


Who are you?
You are a driven Ops engineer who feels personal responsibility for the quality of your application
and its reliability. You are ambitious with what you and your BusDevOps team want to achieve.
You bring positive energy to the team and have very good social and communication skills. This
leads to great performance. We are looking for all levels of experience, from novices to experts.
Your education, experience and background:
• Education at Bachelor/Master level with a strong analytical background, preferably in IT.
• Relevant IT experience: 3 years (as of level 9)
• Relevant domain experience: 2 years (as of level 9)

development of your knowledge in certain fields and as your level of experience increases, you

on the future and make a link between the current situation, developments, the corporate
strategy and the long-term vision.
• As an Ops Engineer, you are able to make good analyses. Problem analysis and judgement is
therefore an essential competency in this profile. To the customer, you act as an expert in
analysing requirements. You are familiar with potential problems related to the IT products to
be implemented and as you develop, you increase your ability to anticipate these problems.
• Performance motivation: an Ops Engineer consistently tries to improve performance and the IT
services provided. You continuously focus on improving your personal performance and that of
your team. You strive to achieve high work standards and are not satisfied with average levels
of performance.
• Flexibility is required in order to get things done. You do not just give up when things are not
going well, and you know who or where to turn to within the organisation if you need support.
• Besides his/her persuasiveness, a successful Ops Engineer also has the ability to adjust his/her
style of communication to and take into account the interests of the people he/she is
addressing. Within the multidisciplinary teams in which you work, you are able to use
arguments that appeal to the people taking part in the discussion and you present your
arguments in measured doses at crucial moments. At higher levels, you influence higher
management and different stakeholders.
• Customer focus and customer interests paramount: a successful Ops Engineer comes up with
solutions that meet the needs of the customer. You understand the customer's needs and
wishes and you can therefore advise the customer on the best IT solution based on your
professional expertise.
• Planning and organisation: the planning and organisation competency is highly important
when it comes to performing the activities in a good flow of sprints. This involves the ability to
accurately assess the size of the units, to set their priority and to schedule them. Of course, this
also involves progress monitoring, ensuring that scheduled tasks are completed on time.
