Being a leader and lead engineer in one of our Customer Communication teams

Customer Communication and technology are key underlying pillars to that strategy; we are becoming a tech company with a banking license as our CEO Ralph Hamers likes to say.

Within ING Domestic Bank Netherlands we are building a state-of-the-art Customer Communication experience to enable our strategic ambitions. A challenging project based on technologies where Java and a diversity of COTS products are needed to deliver the solution. From an engineering perspective not only the engineering side like code development, deployment pipelines, automated testing are important but also knowledge about the COTS products itself. For Customer Communication we have the ambition to let our internal customers model their own communication themselves, instead of our business modellers to become the bottleneck in that. We deliver the services for that and make sure the customer gets the same experience from every channel for every country. We innovate on topics like customer communication preferences, communication pressure, archiving etc. and deliver new solutions for that!

Your job

As a chapter lead, you are responsible for managing and inspiring a chapter of 8-12 Document Management engineers. Your main task is to enable your engineers to grow their mastery and get a little bit better in what they do every day. In the other 50% of your time, as a lead engineer you set the example, share your knowledge, drive innovation, voice your opinion and deliver as a squad member.

Next to that, you are part of our leadership team of our IT Document Management. Together with the other chapter leads and the IT area lead we develop our vision and execute our strategy to inspire our engineers to grow and drive technological innovation. We don’t do that on our own, but we do this together with our Tribe D&CS colleagues!

Managing your chapter means actively working on the development of your engineers through continuous on-the-job coaching and 1:1 conversations. Creating a development plan and monitoring it together. Finding the true purpose of your engineers and enabling them to grow in what they love to do and are good at to find that win-win situation for the engineer and ING.

As a DevOps engineer you will be working in a squad of around 7 engineers and a customer journey expert. In addition to this there will be a product owner who decides on the priority of the user stories and works as an analyst in the squad. Each squad has their own purpose and deliver value for our customers. What you build is also what you operate! You will see your own code work in production and will solve any issue arising with it together with your team.

Your activities start at analysis and end at operations. As such you are a true DevOps engineer! You take care of the right relationships with your COTS supplier and make sure that our applications are safe and secure

Your work environment

ING works in multi-disciplinary teams based on Agile and DevOps principles. Scrum is our way of work, but if necessary we are always open to other ways (like Kanban f.e.) as long as it is agile.

You work in your squad but are also part of a chapter, an expertise focused group that shares knowledge and creates and governs standards. You recognize yourself in the following profile:

Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in leading and coaching fellow engineers in an hierarchical or project role. Minimum of 5 years of experience as a DevOps engineer in similar environments.

We expect from you:

  • Fluent communication skills in English and/or Dutch
  • 5+ years experience in Agile development (SCRUM, Kanban)
  • A teamplayer mindset
  • Leadership qualities
  • 5+ years engineering experience
  • Prepared to travel ad-hoc to Amsterdam and Brussels if needed. Main base is Leeuwarden

Selection Proces

Our selection process consists of the next steps:

  • An interview with a Chapter Lead and an Engineer
  • An interview with a business PAL or Tribelead and your IT area lead
  • An interview with another IT arealead and a HR employee

  • An Excellent salary (range: €4450 - €6400 gross) – based on experience and expertise
  • An 36 to 40 hour workweek
