This role is an ideal position for someone who wants to move from a strategic consultancy into a line management position over time, gaining a 360 degree understanding into the Bank in a short period of time, whilst creating a strong network of senior stakeholders globally

ING Group's Challenger & Growth (C&G) business line serves 25m customers in 10+ countries, and comprises ca. half of ING's assets and profits.

To enable the execution of the ThinkForward strategy within C&G countries, ING has set up a C&G Chief Transformation Office (CTO). The C&G CTO coordinates the design and deployment of ING’s global transformation across C&G countries, and supports the design and execution of C&G’s local strategies, optimising C&Gs change portfolio overall and balancing change roadmaps between functions and countries as required. The department works closely with ING’s Global Transformation Office (GTO), as well as all country executive teams, and representatives from all units and functions. Moreover, the C&G CTO integrates the Chief Operation Officer (COO) function and as such is responsible for continuous optimisation of operational performance across all C&G operations, and for end-to-end cost efficiency across all C&G banks. The C&G CTO coordinates all local COOs and combined 6000+ staff in C&G countries.

The Chief Transformation Office, together with ING GTO, is responsible for:

  • Design and execution of the bank-wide transformation strategy and target operating model, with focus on C&G countries
  • C&G-wide optimization of global and local change programs and budget
  • C&G-wide optimisation and coordination of global and country transformation roadmaps
  • Portfolio monitoring, tracking and reporting within C&G, and transformation communication and engagement of all parties involved/impacted The CTO coordinates all C&G COOs to achieve:
  • Continuous evaluation and optimisation of C&G’s operational performance and capabilities to achieve operational excellence C&G-wide
  • An integrated and optimised operational improvement roadmap within/across countries, leveraging best practice and global knowledge centres
  • A powerful Operations brand and community, across C&G countries

Job description

As part of the CTO team you will be responsible for:

  • Strategically support design and deployment of ING’s Think Forward transformation strategy and target operating model, aligning with C&G business objectives, digitalisation and e2e customer strategy. Expectation is that 5 FTEs will report to this person.
  • Follows the functional steering on objectives and KPIs, additional to respective mandates, as provided and cascaded by head of CTO C&G to locations in scope.
  • Define C&G operations improvement strategy and targets jointly with Head of Retail, Head of Wholesale, GTO, BWO, COOs and Head of C&G Ops
  • Develop C&G transformation roadmap jointly with C&G CTOs, retail council, wholesale, GTO, Group COO / IT
  • Manage and monitor implementation of ThinkForward strategy in C&G countries - strong focus on the articulation, optimisation and tracking of the implementation of the bank-wide operating model in C&G
  • Development of implementation scenarios and business cases for transformation and operating model changes
  • Cross-country coordination, support and assurance of functional/global programmes - from initial design, to business case development and implementation planning – assuring alignment with C&G business requirements
  • Assure business outcomes for C&G and manage regular financial interlocks and 90-day roadmaps / QBRs across countries and global programmes
  • Support C&G representation across Bank-wide governance and establish/manage C&G transformation governance
  • Define C&G operations improvement strategy and targets jointly with COOs and C&G Ops team
  • Executive stakeholder management and alignment of local/country and global/functional transformation projects
  • Supporting the development and deployment of ING’s COO strategy (Operations and IT)

Your Skills

  • Proven track record (5 years plus) in strategic consulting (with a strategy consulting firm or equivalent)
  • 10 years+ track record in designing or managing large change programmes/portfolios (1bn plus), involving operating model changes (preferably in financial industry or hi-tech companies)
  • Experience in operating model design and implementation, within the Retail and Commercial Banking environments
  • 10+ years’ experience in large, global organisation, and proven ability to manage senior stakeholder relationships in highly complex matrix organizations (at CxO, CxO-1 level)
  • Robust expertise in international Retail Banking – expert understanding of complex Financial Services environments
  • Experience in operations or IT strongly desirable
  • Skilled in process analysis, mapping and design. An understanding of technical designs processes to support the delivery of IT solutions desirable.
  • Leadership of project work streams including management of team members
  • Strong understanding of process design and improvement
  • Understanding of current IT specific concepts and trends (including modular IT design, Cloud, agile, digitalisation), ideally within the Financial Services industry
  • MBA or equivalent
  • Excellent written & spoken English essential.
  • Multiple languages preferred.
  • Extremely strong strategic/conceptual thinking – ability to frame complex issues
  • Analytical (quantitative/ qualitative) skills
  • Business acumen and problem solving: ability to understand business/customer needs and design solutions accordingly
  • Strong leadership skills to lead and motivate a high performing, empowered, focused and fulfilled team
  • An excellent communicator and influencer, building relationships within the project / portfolio team as with our many internal senior stakeholders
  • Ability to engage and influence at all levels of stakeholder, both internally and externally
  • Proven business transformation management skills – consistent delivery of high-quality output under strong time pressure
  • Ability to deal well with very high levels of ambiguity, both in terms of process and content.
  • Highly motivated self-starter able to work with minimal supervision and direction
  • Mastery of performance management frameworks (e.g. balanced scorecard) and tools in the delivery of business objectives
  • Virtual team management experience with the ability to manage and motive virtual or matrix project teams
  • Experience across multiple delivery methodologies, ideally including Agile
  • Delivery / result oriented, ability to function effectively individually as well as in a team
  • Ability to juggle different projects/priorities and deliver high quality outcomes under pressure

  • The challenge in this role is firstly the simplification of organisational complexity into an effective conceptual framework which enables the organisation to explore relevant operating model options and transformation levers. Based on the analysis of available options, assessing both internal and external data points, a case needs to be developed for organisational change.
  • Navigating and influencing the existing organization matrix, the right balance needs to be determined between global strategy and local plans, and between existing change portfolios and new investments.

The team is directly supporting the Head of C&G and Group COO and needs to effectively manage senior stakeholders (Board members, local CEOs, local and global COOs and CIOs as well as Heads of value chains (Head of Payments, Head of Mortgages, Head of Savings) to generate consensus while orchestrating the required change. Ability to gain people’s commitment and achieve good cooperation between teams is crucial for the success of this position.
