You work together with over 80 other motivated and knowledgeable colleagues to fight financial and economic crime by developing & enhancing Rabobank’s transaction monitoring model for Dutch Retail Customers. As an analytics translator you directly ensure that data scientists and engineers, products owners and functional experts working in different squads develop valuable model components and that they can implement these components more easily with clear and efficient processes.

You and your job
As an analytics translator you have a clear overview of the whole model for transaction monitoring and a good understanding of what is functionally and technically possible. Together with data scientists, you brainstorm on features/requirements for the model, come to new solutions and communicate these to the rest of the team and stakeholders from other teams. You do not code, perform analyses or create dashboards yourself, but rather guide the data scientists or data analysts you work with to help them do their work. You also make sure that the processes involved in the data science work continuously improve to make the work of everyone efficient. This means that you are involved in multiple projects simultaneously and work together with colleagues from various areas of expertise and in different roles, such as data scientists, data analysts, DevOps engineers, anti-money laundering experts, product owners, other analytics translators and stakeholders across the bank. You will join one of the squads, as well as a growing group of analytics translators that value collaboration, welcome new ideas and foster a learning environment, through regular planning, alignment and knowledge sharing sessions.

Practical examples

  • You are the single point of contact (SPOC) for a specific topic, process or project. A SPOC is the key person colleagues turn to for questions and request that relate to the topic.  For example, as the SPOC for the sign-off process, you help other team members with their questions on this process (i.e. how to perform the risk assessment) and pro-actively advise and take action to improve this process. As the SPOC for the lookbacks (i.e. executing the model on historical data, therefore “looking back”), you gather and align on functional and technical requirements, engage in discussions about process bottlenecks and deficiencies and potential solutions, and ensure traceability by maintaining archives of reports and results, findings and documenting decisions and changes made to the lookback process. As the SPOC for alignment with the consumers of the model’s output, you keep an overview of the changes in our platform, understand which changes have impacts on our consumers and communicate the impact effectively through weekly meetings with the relevant stakeholders.
  • You initiate and work on improving processes. In general you look for process bottlenecks, potential solutions and technical enhancements that enable the data scientists and the overall area to improve their work and the success of the model. You initiate meetings, facilitate workshops and initiate tasks to work on the improvements. For example, it is important we continuously monitor if our model is performing as we expect. From your discussions with stakeholders and team members you understand what the key risks are, you design tests and acceptance criteria that help us keep track of these risks, and you align with data scientists to determine in which way these tests can be implemented technically. You also ensure that you document each step of these projects to indicate why certain actions and decisions have been taken.
  • You advise on technical & functional requirements, including analyses that need to be conducted. For example, when a team of data scientists wants to build a functionality in the platform that improves the effectiveness of money laundry detection, it is important to show the stakeholders that this functionality behaves within the risk appetite of the bank. You come up with the analysis that can show this and align with the data scientists or data analysts that will perform the analysis. You interpret the results and come up with suggestions for refining the analysis. You visualize the final results in a way that tells your story clearly, create PowerPoint proposals including the supporting arguments to get the approval from the stakeholders, and make sure that the decisions are clearly and properly documented.

Top three responsibilities

  • Brainstorm with data scientists on features/requirements for the model, come to new solutions and communicate these to the rest of the team and stakeholders from other teams.
  • Work on improving processes involved in the data science work to continuously make these more efficient.
  • Act as a single point of contact (SPOC) for key topics, play an active role in various projects, coordinate requests, document technical and nontechnical subjects, prepare decision-making proposals, host workshops, design processes, and manage stakeholders.
